Saudi Arabia Leads Sustainable Tourism Innovations at G20 Summit

Saudi Arabia took center stage at the G20 Tourism Working Group meeting in Belém, Brazil, showcasing its groundbreaking approach to sustainable tourism. The event, held at the Centro de Convenções e Feiras da Amazônia, brought together representatives from the world’s largest economies to discuss critical issues like sustainability, cultural diversity, and international cooperation.

Leading the charge for Saudi Arabia was Minister of Tourism, His Excellency Ahmed Al-Khateeb, a figure widely recognized for his leadership in addressing tourism challenges. His commitment to sustainable tourism and ethical practices is evident in the establishment of the Sustainable Tourism Global Center (STGC), which released crucial Environmental Impact Research in October 2023. Al-Khateeb’s vision extends beyond Saudi Arabia’s borders, as he actively promotes sustainable practices globally, particularly in supporting Small Island Developing States.

The G20 meeting highlighted the growing importance of sustainable tourism and its impact on both economic development and environmental protection. Participants acknowledged the increasing challenges facing the tourism industry, emphasizing the need for greater coordination across sectors and a renewed focus on governance. Key priorities included promoting gender equality, social inclusion, decent work, climate action, and measuring tourism’s multifaceted impacts.

The G20 economies represent a significant portion of the global tourism landscape, accounting for over 70% of international tourist arrivals and 82% of global tourism GDP. The tourism sector contributed 3.1% to the G20’s GDP in 2023, showcasing its vital role in the global economy. By mid-2024, international tourist arrivals had rebounded to 97% of pre-pandemic levels, with countries like Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, Spain, Japan, and Brazil leading the growth.

The event provided a platform for discussions and collaboration among global tourism leaders, with speakers from Azerbaijan, Canada, Chile, India, Indonesia, Jamaica, Saudi Arabia, Spain, and the United States sharing insights and experiences. The meeting served as a reminder of the vital role tourism plays in fostering cultural exchange, economic growth, and environmental sustainability. As the world continues to grapple with the challenges of climate change and globalization, the G20 Tourism Working Group provides a critical forum for countries to collaborate and develop sustainable solutions for the future of the tourism industry.
