Saudi Arabia is actively enhancing its offerings for Malaysian pilgrims, simplifying their journey and enriching their experience. The Kingdom, driven by its ambitious Vision 2030 plan to attract 30 million pilgrims, is taking concrete steps to make this a reality.
Since the launch of the “Nusuk” platform in 2022, a unified government initiative in collaboration with the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, Saudi Tourism Authority has introduced a comprehensive suite of digital services and information. This platform streamlines the Umrah pilgrimage process, making it more accessible and convenient for international pilgrims.
Strengthening the strategic partnership between Saudi Arabia and Malaysia, established in 1961, Malaysian citizens are now part of a select group of 67 nationalities eligible for an electronic visa through the “Visit Saudi” platform. This allows visitors to perform Umrah, pray at the Prophet’s Mosque, and explore the rich cultural and historical landmarks of Mecca and Medina. Malaysian pilgrims are granted a stay of up to 90 days within a year, providing ample time to immerse themselves in the sacred experiences.
To further cater to the needs of Malaysian pilgrims, the “Nusuk” platform is available in Malay (Bahasa Malaysia), alongside nine other languages. Pilgrims can also access 24/7 assistance through a unified call center and conveniently book travel programs and packages via various private sector platforms.
Demonstrating the significance of Malaysia’s tourism market, the Saudi Tourism Authority hosted a five-day interactive exhibition in Putrajaya. The event, held from August 28 to September 1, 2024, at IOI City Mall, attracted a large audience. Over 10 Malaysian travel and Umrah companies participated, showcasing their services and offering insights into the unique experiences available. Visitors were captivated by engaging virtual reality (VR) displays, offering a glimpse into the history and significance of Islam.
Beyond the spiritual journey, Malaysian pilgrims can discover the diverse tourism offerings across Saudi Arabia. In Mecca, they can visit the “Cultural District of Hira,” home to the “Exhibition of Revelation,” a captivating display showcasing the story of divine revelation. The “Holy Quran Museum,” the first of its kind in Mecca, provides a deeper understanding of the Quran’s history and significance. A pilgrimage to the historic Cave of Hira, where the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) received his first revelation, is an impactful experience. Visitors can also savor the unique flavors of traditional Saudi coffee at the “Saudi Coffee Museum.”
In Medina, pilgrims can explore significant Islamic landmarks, including the Prophet’s Mosque, Quba Mosque, Qiblatain Mosque, and the Baqi’ Cemetery. Additional highlights include climbing Mount Uhud, visiting the Field of Uhud Martyrs, and exploring the Palace of Urwa bin al-Zubair. For a glimpse into the intricate process of Quran printing, pilgrims can tour the King Fahd Complex for the Printing of the Holy Quran.
For nature enthusiasts, a two-hour drive from Medina leads to the “Khaybar Oasis,” a stunning volcanic landscape with freshwater sources and fertile grounds. Visitors can enjoy leisurely walks, cycling, or exploring sites like Nizar Castle.
Another must-see destination is “Al Ula,” a living museum brimming with historical and natural beauty. Visitors can uncover the ancient city of Dadan, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and marvel at Hegra, an ancient Nabataean city. The modern architectural wonder, Maraya Hall in Ashar Valley, offers a unique perspective on contemporary Saudi Arabia. Al Ula is ideal for those who enjoy scenic hikes and exploring ancient history.
Malaysian visitors will also be drawn to Jeddah, a vibrant city celebrated for its cultural diversity, beautiful beaches, and historical sites. They can stroll through Al-Balad, Jeddah’s old city, and admire the 1,400-year-old Al-Shafi’i Mosque. Jeddah’s malls offer a haven for shopping enthusiasts, while its beaches provide opportunities for island hopping, fishing, and diving. Visitors can also marvel at the King Fahd Fountain, the tallest in the world, reaching a height of 312 meters.
Saudi Arabia, with its blend of spirituality, culture, and modern experiences, ensures that Malaysian pilgrims not only fulfill their religious obligations but also enjoy memorable adventures that will last a lifetime.
