Saudi designer Tima Abid presented her latest couture collection at the inaugural Red Sea Fashion Week in Saudi Arabia, marking a significant moment for both the fashion industry and the country’s burgeoning tourism sector. Abid’s collection featured flowing white and beige fabrics, with only the occasional visible midriff, adhering to the country’s cultural norms. A second show showcased women’s swimwear, a bold move in a conservative society where abaya robes were once mandatory.
Held at the St Regis Red Sea Resort on Ummahat Alshaikh island, accessible only by chartered boat or seaplane, the event highlighted Saudi Arabia’s commitment to diversifying its economy and promoting tourism. The country has introduced a general tourism visa since 2019 and has showcased its diverse landscapes, from mountains in the south to the planned futuristic mega-city of NEOM.
Red Sea Fashion Week aimed to showcase Saudi Arabia’s potential as a fashion destination, competing with Dubai and other fashion capitals. Designer Alanoud Badr of Lady Fozaza remarked, “Maldives what?” emphasizing the unexpected beauty and allure of the island location.
Despite regional conflicts and ongoing criticism of Saudi Arabia’s human rights record, the country remains committed to its fashion and tourism investments. Model Beatris Resende encouraged people to look beyond stereotypes and experience the country’s unique charm. The event attracted designers, fashion journalists, and Saudi celebrities, including Lojain Omran, highlighting the growing interest in Saudi Arabia’s fashion scene.
