Saudi Arabia’s Travel Sector Surpasses Expectations, Revising Vision 2030 Goals

Saudi Arabia’s Travel Sector Soars, Revising Vision 2030 Goals

Saudi Arabia’s travel sector has not only met but surpassed expectations in the transformative landscape of 2023, prompting a substantial recalibration of its Vision 2030 ambitions. This year, the Kingdom scaled up its initial target of securing 100 million visits by the end of the decade. In October, Tourism Minister Ahmed Al-Khateeb announced a revised ambition of 150 million visitors, reflecting the sector’s impressive growth.

Saudi airports recorded over 93.5 million tourists in 2022, with approximately 77 million domestic visitors and 16.5 million from international destinations. This growth has been bolstered by regulatory adjustments, including the new ‘Visiting Investor’ visa, approved by the Ministry of Investment and the Foreign Affairs department. The e-visa service scheme now allows international investors to apply online, expanding its coverage from nearly 60 nations to all countries worldwide, eliminating the need for visits to Saudi embassies.

As part of Saudi Arabia’s economic diversification initiative, the Kingdom aims to make tourism its second largest revenue source by 2030. Vision 2030 is driving the development of attractions that meet the highest international standards, improving visa issuance procedures, and preparing Saudi Arabia’s historical and heritage sites for visitors. A key project contributing to this industry growth is the launch of Riyadh Air, the Kingdom’s new flag-carrier. The airline aims to turn the Saudi capital into a global destination for transportation, trade, and tourism.

This mission is advancing rapidly, with Saudi Arabia ranked second globally in tourist arrivals during the first seven months of 2023. The Kingdom’s Air Connectivity Program is expanding with new direct flights between Jeddah, Riyadh, and destinations such as Casablanca, Brussels, and Beijing. In October, the General Authority for Civil Aviation unveiled a strategy to attract $100 billion in investments by 2030, aiming to bolster competitiveness and enhance transparency in the sector.

Saudi Arabia’s bold steps to showcase its history, landscapes, and cultural diversity are setting the stage for a golden decade in its tourism sector, marking a significant stride towards achieving its Vision 2030 goals.
