Nestled in the heart of Jersey City’s McGinley Square at 189 Monticello Ave., Moore’s Lounge has been a beacon for the city’s jazz scene for over five decades. The beloved local business, affectionately known as “Miss Ruth’s” after its owner, Ruth Moore, has faced closure due to financial challenges. However, the community has rallied to save this cultural landmark, organizing benefits and launching a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds.
Founded in 1968, Moore’s Lounge has been a nurturing ground for aspiring musicians and a stage for legendary jazz performers. Curated by renowned drummer Winard Harper, the open mic jam sessions and “Meet the Artist” events have fostered a vibrant jazz culture in Jersey City. Over the years, Moore’s Lounge has become a beloved gathering place for generations of residents, hosting events like Miss Ruth’s Friday Fish Fries and providing a space for the community to connect over music and creativity.
In 2019, Moore’s Lounge faced financial difficulties and had to take out a high-interest loan. Complications with the contractor led to long delays in reopening, and the pandemic lockdown further exacerbated the situation. As a result, Moore’s Lounge fell into arrears and now faces costly late fees and possible foreclosure.
Recognizing the cultural significance of Moore’s Lounge, the local hip-hop community, led by Jersey City icon Junestar Mr. Blackman, has been instrumental in fundraising efforts. Upcoming benefits include the “Beneficial” concert on April 27th and the “We the People II: Vox Populi” showcase on May 4th. These events feature a lineup of talented local artists who will perform and encourage donations to support Moore’s Lounge.
The GoFundMe campaign, launched in January 2023, has raised over $9,700 towards its $15,000 goal. The funds raised will help cover the financial shortfall and ensure that Moore’s Lounge can continue to provide a space for jazz and community in Jersey City.
With the support of the community and the tireless efforts of those involved in the fundraising campaign, Moore’s Lounge is poised to overcome this challenge and continue its legacy as a vital part of Jersey City’s cultural landscape.
