SaxaVord Spaceport Receives Range Control License, Preparing for Inaugural Launch

SaxaVord Spaceport, located at the northernmost tip of the UK on Unst, has been granted a range control license by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). This license empowers SaxaVord to clear and control the designated “downrange” zone during launch operations, ensuring the safety of maritime and aviation traffic in the vicinity. The issuance of the range license follows SaxaVord’s acquisition of a spaceport license in December, which affirmed the privately-owned site’s compliance with safety and environmental standards for vertical space launches.

The next phase of the regulatory process involves the issuance of launch operator licenses to companies intending to utilize the spaceport. As Western Europe’s sole fully licensed vertical launch spaceport, SaxaVord is preparing for the commencement of orbital launch operations later this year. The CAA emphasizes that the size of the clearance zones will vary depending on the type of rocket employed, with larger areas required for early launches due to the higher potential for failure.

German company Rocket Factory Augsburg aims to be the first to launch satellites into space from Unst later this year, with several other organizations expressing interest in utilizing the site. SaxaVord’s ultimate goal is to establish a launch cadence of approximately one per month. Frank Strang, chief executive of SaxaVord Spaceport, expressed delight at the granting of the range license and its approval by the Secretary of State for Transport.

Transport Secretary Mark Harper emphasized the significance of the announcement for SaxaVord’s preparations for the UK’s first commercial vertical space launch. He stressed the paramount importance of safety for all involved, which is guaranteed by the range license. SaxaVord’s commitment to adhering to safety protocols under the CAA’s supervision is a testament to its dedication to responsible operations. The granting of the range license paves the way for SaxaVord to contribute to the growth of the UK’s space sector and create skilled employment opportunities.
