Sayram Lake Embraces Sustainability with All-Green Electricity and Zero-Carbon Goals

Sayram Lake, renowned for its breathtaking beauty, has become a beacon of sustainable tourism in Xinjiang. This captivating destination, with its shimmering green waters, draws a growing number of visitors each year. To preserve the lake’s natural environment and ensure its long-term health, a grazing ban has been enforced on 164,500 mu of grassland in the core area. This significant move has resulted in the relocation of over 900 herder families and 200,000 livestock, demonstrating a commitment to ecological conservation.

To further protect the pristine environment, 80 kilometers of fencing and 12 protection stations have been strategically placed to prevent tourists from accessing the fragile glacier and snow areas. The Sayram Lake scenic area, spanning 1,314 square kilometers, is powered by 21 supply lines of 10 kV and above. In 2022, the area achieved a remarkable feat – becoming Xinjiang’s first all-green electricity scenic area. To achieve this, a sophisticated power network utilizing buried cables was implemented. Charging stations have been installed strategically around the lake, providing convenient access for electric vehicles. An eco-friendly parking lot complements these efforts, encouraging sustainable travel practices.

Sayram Lake promotes low-carbon transportation, emphasizing the use of electric cars, bicycles, and hybrid vehicles. This commitment to sustainable tourism is evident in the area’s annual electricity usage of 36 million kilowatt-hours, showcasing a dedication to green development. The transition to “full electrification” extends beyond transportation, encompassing travel, accommodation, and attractions. Over 770 businesses, including hotels and restaurants, now rely on clean energy, effectively eliminating the reliance on coal-fired heating.

In 2024, State Grid Bortala Power Supply Company introduced innovative clean energy solutions to support Sayram Lake’s ongoing green transformation. A demonstration project for “integrated photovoltaic storage and charging” is underway, along with the development of a distributed photovoltaic microgrid and V2G charging stations. These forward-thinking initiatives solidify Sayram Lake’s commitment to becoming a zero-carbon scenic area. This ambitious goal encompasses the entire energy spectrum, from generation and storage to consumption, creating a truly sustainable model for tourism.

Sayram Lake’s journey towards a sustainable future is a testament to the power of collaboration, innovation, and a deep commitment to environmental responsibility. By embracing clean energy and prioritizing low-carbon practices, Sayram Lake is not only preserving its stunning natural beauty but also inspiring other destinations to adopt similar practices, contributing to a greener and more sustainable future for all.
