Delaney Schnell took the lead in the women’s 10-meter platform event at the U.S. Olympic diving trials on Friday night, setting her sights on a double event appearance in Paris. Schnell, a silver medalist in synchronized 10-meter with Jess Parratto at the Tokyo Games, scored 325.95 points in the individual event, placing her 18.10 points ahead of Daryn Wright going into the Sunday final. Sophia McAfee secured third place with 275.10 points.
Meanwhile, Andrew Capobianco dominated the men’s 3-meter springboard competition, finishing the semifinals with a score of 507.25. He showcased strong performances on his final two dives, scoring 91.65 and 91.20, which propelled him 21.65 points ahead of Carson Tyler, who sits in second place with 485.60. Luke Sitz occupies the third spot with 430.10 points.
The scores from the semifinals will carry over to the finals, with the top two finishers in the men’s 3-meter event earning Olympic berths. However, only the winner in the women’s 10-meter event will secure a spot in Paris.
Tyler, who led after the platform semifinals, faces a busy weekend ahead. He will compete for an Olympic berth in the platform event on Saturday, followed by the springboard final the next day. This weekend’s trials are shaping up to be a thrilling showdown as divers vie for coveted spots on the U.S. Olympic team.
