A tragic incident occurred in central Nigeria’s Plateau state on Saturday when a two-story school building collapsed, resulting in the deaths of 22 people. The building, belonging to Saint Academy in the Busa Buji community of Jos North district, collapsed during school hours around 0730 GMT.
According to Sky News, a total of 154 individuals were trapped under the debris. Rescue efforts were immediately launched, and thankfully, all but the deceased were successfully rescued and are currently receiving treatment for their injuries at various hospitals.
The Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed that 30 people remain hospitalized. In a Facebook post, NEMA stated that rescue efforts have concluded, and the site has been cleared.
Building collapses are unfortunately a recurring problem in Africa’s most populous nation, largely attributed to lax safety regulations and the frequent use of substandard construction materials.
