Several schools across Delhi-NCR, the National Capital Region, were targeted with bomb threats via email on Wednesday morning. The emails originated from an email ID using the Arabic word “Sawariim,” which means “clashing of the swords” and has been associated with Islamic State propaganda since 2014.
As many as 80 schools in Delhi and NCR received these threatening emails, prompting immediate action from the Delhi Police Cyber Cell, which traced the IP address of the threatening messages. Investigations revealed that the emails originated in Russia and may have been sent using a VPN, indicating an attempt to sow panic in the region.
In response to the threats, security measures have been significantly enhanced in Delhi. Thorough searches are being conducted by the Delhi Police, and schools have been evacuated or closed as a precaution. Metro and railway stations, bus stands, and markets have also been placed under heightened security.
Despite the bomb threats being deemed hoaxes thus far, authorities are maintaining a heightened state of alert. Additional police and paramilitary forces have been deployed throughout Delhi, and barricades have been set up at city borders. Security personnel have been instructed to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
The Delhi Fire Services has reported over 80 bomb threat calls received from various schools since early morning, and investigations into the matter are ongoing. As the situation develops, authorities are urging the public to remain calm and report any suspicious activity to the appropriate authorities.
