Schools and colleges in the Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka will remain closed today, June 27, due to heavy rains and a red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for coastal Karnataka. The district’s Deputy Commissioner, Mullai Muhilan, issued an order announcing the closure of Anganwadis, government-aided schools, and primary high schools. The order stated that a holiday has been declared for all schools in Mangaluru as heavy rains continue to lash the district.
The IMD has predicted turbulent weather conditions for the Karnataka coast, with winds expected to blow at speeds between 35 kmph and 45 kmph, potentially reaching up to 55 kmph in gusts. The red alert extends to the districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada. The IMD forecast predicts heavy to very heavy rains along with winds of 30/40 km/h in coastal Karnataka on Thursday. This rainfall is expected to persist in the coastal district from June 28 to June 30.
In light of the heavy rainfall and red alert, the district administration has implemented various precautionary measures. Areas prone to landslides have been identified, and measures to mitigate risks have been put in place. Fishermen have been advised to refrain from venturing into the sea for fishing activities. The public has been urged to avoid going to the seashore, rivers, and low-lying areas. Schools may switch to online classes if weather conditions worsen.
