Scotland’s hopes for a Euro 2024 knockout stage appearance have taken a hit with the news that left-back Kieran Tierney has been ruled out of the tournament due to a hamstring injury. Tierney sustained the injury during Scotland’s 1-1 draw against Switzerland, where he was stretchered off after going down clutching his hamstring. This injury, unfortunately, ends his participation in the tournament.
Scotland’s assistant coach, John Carver, confirmed the severity of the injury, stating, “He’s got an issue with his hamstring.” Tierney has since left the Scotland camp and will return to his club, Arsenal, to receive treatment for the injury. This isn’t the first time Tierney has struggled with hamstring problems, having experienced similar issues during his loan spell at Real Sociedad last season, limiting his appearances to just 14 starts in La Liga.
Scotland, who have never advanced to the knockout stage at a major tournament, are in a must-win situation against Hungary in their final Group A game in Stuttgart on Sunday. A victory would secure at least a third-place finish, guaranteeing their progression to the next round, as four points have consistently been enough to reach the last 16 in the current European Championship format.
While Tierney’s absence is a blow to the team, Carver remains optimistic about his recovery, saying, “If we do progress and we move through the tournament, I’m sure he’ll be back to support us.” He added, “He’s a young lad, he’s got plenty of time and he’s got to make sure it’s right for his return.” Tierney’s absence could necessitate a shift in Scotland’s defensive formation, potentially leading to a back four against Hungary. The team will now look to overcome this challenge and secure their first-ever knockout stage appearance in a major tournament.
