Seattle Storm icon Sue Bird, who retired after the 2022 season as the league’s all-time assists leader with 3,234, has joined the Storm ownership group, Force 10 Hoops announced Wednesday.
Financial details were not disclosed, but Bird’s investment in the Storm is a testament to her continued commitment to the franchise and to the growth of women’s sports.
“Investing in women’s sports isn’t just about passion,” Bird said in a team statement. “It’s smart business.”
Bird, the No. 1 overall pick by Seattle in the 2002 WNBA draft, spent nearly two decades with the Storm, helping the team win championships in 2004, 2010, 2018 and 2020.
She was also part of UConn’s NCAA championships in 2000 and 2002.
Storm co-owner Lisa Brummel said Bird’s “knowledge of the game and the league, plus her business acumen” will be invaluable to the ownership group, which recently opened the $64 million Seattle Storm Center for Basketball Performance.
Bird’s addition to the ownership group is a significant moment for the Storm and for women’s sports. Her experience, leadership, and passion for the game will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations of athletes and fans.
