The House Oversight Committee is summoning the head of the U.S. Secret Service to testify about the deadly shooting that occurred at former President Donald Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday night. Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., alleges that Trump survived an assassination attempt, with a gunman firing a weapon at him. Comer highlights the bravery of Secret Service agents who protected Trump, neutralized the gunman, and possibly prevented further casualties. He has initiated an investigation and requested the Secret Service Director’s appearance at a hearing on July 22nd, a week after the Republican National Convention (RNC).
The House Homeland Security Committee is also seeking information regarding the incident. Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., vows to summon the Secret Service Director and other officials from DHS and the FBI to provide answers. Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., urges the Secret Service to address security concerns following the incident, particularly regarding the upcoming RNC and Democratic National Convention (DNC).
The shooting occurred during Trump’s remarks, with a gunman firing from a nearby roof. Trump was struck in the ear, and one attendee was killed, while two others were critically injured. The shooter was subsequently killed by law enforcement.
Following the incident, Trump was escorted off-stage by Secret Service agents who swiftly protected him. The Trump campaign has indicated that he will still attend the RNC.
