In a deeply personal revelation, Selena Gomez has opened up about her inability to give birth. During a cover interview for *Vanity Fair*, the singer and actress shared, “I’m not able to carry. It’s not something I talk about often, but I have been through a lot of medical complications. It’s been challenging, but I’m grateful for the knowledge that I have. Honestly, it’s just not something that I have had a choice over. I have been through a lot of sadness because of this.”
Gomez, who has publicly navigated struggles with lupus and bipolar disorder, previously touched on the possibility of not being able to have biological children in a 2022 interview with *Rolling Stone*. She revealed that the medications she takes for bipolar disorder had made her apprehensive about her future as a mother, leading her to tears in her car. However, she maintained her desire to become a parent, stating, “I’m going to have children, regardless of what that looks like.”
In the *Vanity Fair* interview, Gomez further elaborated on her evolving perspective. “I’m a little bit more open to it. I think that there’s a lot of people who are wonderful who would be incredible mothers and dads – surrogate mothers and dads. I’ve learned from them, I’ve grown. It’s beautiful. And it’s also so important to understand that you don’t have to be able to carry a child to be a mother.” She concluded by emphasizing her optimism about the future, “I am so excited for the future. It’s not what I thought it was going to be, but it’s beautiful and I have no idea what it looks like, but I know I’m a mother. It’s not a biological mother, but I am a mother.”
