Self-Styled Godman ‘Bhole Baba’ Speaks on Hathras Stampede, Reflecting on Past Controversy

Suraj Pal, known as ‘Bhole Baba,’ a self-styled godman, has broken his silence on the devastating Hathras stampede that claimed the lives of over 121 people. In a statement released on July 6, 2024, Bhole Baba urged people to maintain faith in God and the administration, emphasizing that anyone responsible for the chaos will not be spared. He expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the victims, particularly the many women and children who lost their lives in the tragic incident.

Bhole Baba’s statement also serves as a reminder of a past controversy that unfolded in 2000. He was arrested by Agra’s Shahganj police station for falsely claiming to bring a 15-year-old dead girl back to life. His followers, believing in his magical powers, had taken the deceased girl to the crematorium for a demonstration. The incident led to violence, resulting in the arrest of Suraj Pal and several of his followers. They were charged under the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954. While a court order later acquitted Suraj Pal, the incident remains a part of his past.

Bhole Baba’s latest statement about the Hathras stampede highlights his desire to offer comfort and support during this difficult time. He requests the committee formed to assist the bereaved families to stand with them and provide support throughout their lives. His words, though framed with a religious lens, aim to provide a sense of hope and resilience in the face of tragedy.
