Senator Thom Tillis, Republican from North Carolina, has expressed strong disapproval towards Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, Republican from Georgia. Tillis characterized Greene as a ‘total waste of time’ and a ‘horrible leader’ during an interview with CNN reporter Lauren Fox on Tuesday. Tillis’s criticism stems from Greene’s recent motion to force a vote on removing House Speaker Mike Johnson, a move that has received support from only two other Republican members of Congress. Tillis believes that Greene’s actions are detrimental to the Republican brand and pose a significant obstacle to regaining majority control.
Greene’s opposition to military aid for Ukraine has garnered support from Kremlin-backed media, aligning her with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, who has also been embraced by Russian propagandists. Tillis has previously criticized Carlson’s stance on Ukraine.
Other Republican senators featured on CNN shared Tillis’s sentiments, expressing concerns about party members who prioritize personal attention over substance. Utah Senator Mitt Romney described such individuals as engaging in ‘a lot of sound and fury signifying nothing,’ while North Dakota Senator Kevin Kramer emphasized the unlikelihood of finding a replacement who would satisfy those seeking Johnson’s removal.
The future of House Speaker Johnson largely rests in the hands of House Democrats, given the narrow Republican majority. Some Democrats have expressed reluctance to support Johnson’s replacement.
