The Senate is poised to vote on a $95 billion foreign aid package that will send financial assistance to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. The package has been met with bipartisan support, with both Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) stressing its importance for protecting U.S. allies.
The package includes $33 billion for Ukraine, $5 billion for Israel, and $2 billion for Taiwan. The funds are intended to support these countries’ defense efforts, economic development, and other pressing needs.
The Senate’s vote comes after a lengthy delay in the House, which finally passed four separate aid bills over the weekend. The delay drew criticism from Republican leaders, who argued that it had hindered Ukraine’s ability to defend itself against Russian aggression.
While the aid package is expected to pass the Senate, it faces some opposition from progressive senators, such as Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), who have raised concerns about the allocation of funds for Israel’s military. Additionally, the package includes a bill that would ban TikTok, giving ByteDance, the app’s Chinese parent company, a year to find a new buyer for its U.S. operations.
