After an extended period of uncertainty, it has been revealed that USA defender Sergino Dest will miss a significant amount of time due to a knee injury. The injury occurred during PSV training and has forced the right-back to withdraw from the upcoming Copa America tournament.
According to a report by The Athletic, Dest’s absence could extend up to nine months. This extended timeline will have a substantial impact on both PSV and the United States men’s national team. PSV had expressed interest in making Dest’s loan move permanent, citing his impressive performance with seven assists in 37 games.
Dest’s injury will also rule him out of the Copa America, where the United States is considered a strong contender. The 23-year-old defender has been a mainstay for the Stars and Stripes since making his debut in 2019. He played a pivotal role in the CONCACAF Nations League triumphs over Jamaica and Mexico last month.
The United States has been drawn into Group C for the Copa America alongside Bolivia, Uruguay, and Panama. Despite Dest’s absence, the team remains a heavy favorite to advance to the quarterfinals. Their first game of the tournament is scheduled for June 23 against Bolivia.
