Severe Turbulence Forces Qatar Airways Flight to Emergency Landing in Dublin

A Qatar Airways flight from Doha to Dublin made an urgent emergency landing in Dublin on Sunday, May 26, 2024, after encountering severe turbulence over Turkey. The incident, involving a Boeing 787 Dreamliner (QR017), resulted in 12 injuries among passengers and crew. The injured were promptly attended to by emergency services upon the plane’s safe landing. According to Dublin Airport officials, the emergency landing was prompted by reports of six passengers and six crew members sustaining injuries due to the turbulence. This incident follows closely on the heels of another serious event involving a Singapore Airlines flight from London to Singapore, which was forced to make an emergency landing in Bangkok just five days earlier. That episode of severe turbulence resulted in the death of a 73-year-old British passenger and critical injuries to 20 other individuals. A study from the US National Transportation Safety Board in 2021 highlighted that turbulence is the leading cause of airline accidents, accounting for more than one-third of all reported incidents from 2009 to 2018. While these turbulence events frequently resulted in serious injuries, they rarely caused any structural damage to the aircraft involved.
