Shanghai Emerges as a Top Inbound Tourism Destination During May Day Holiday

During the May Day holiday, Shanghai gained prominence as a prime destination for inbound tourism. Ctrip Group’s division Trip.com introduced a successful “free half-day tour” initiative on April 15. This initiative, lauded internationally, resulted in a notable 130 percent upsurge in inbound tourism bookings. Its aim was to elevate visitor experiences and present China in a positive light.

A report by Tongcheng Travel on May Day holiday travel trends revealed that Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Chengdu were popular inbound flight destinations, demonstrating their global allure.

The “Visit Shanghai” initiative, spearheaded by the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism, further boosted inbound tourism to the city. This campaign, disseminated in 14 languages across five major international social media platforms, strategically highlighted Shanghai’s urban tourism appeal.

Throughout the holiday, Shanghai played host to an array of prestigious events such as the 2024 Shanghai Longines Global Champions Tour, Shanghai Auto Culture Festival, and Shanghai Coffee Week, captivating visitors from around the globe.

Additionally, Shanghai’s cultural scene was enriched with numerous art and cultural exhibitions, with over 200 offline displays, 1,000 educational activities, and 10,000 public events. These events further enhanced the city’s vibrant cultural landscape.
