With housing expenses being a substantial financial burden for many individuals, sharing costs with a roommate can offer significant savings opportunities. However, variations in housing costs across major U.S. cities raise the question of how much one can save by choosing a two-bedroom apartment with a roommate instead of renting a one-bedroom unit alone. To address this query, SmartAsset meticulously analyzed median apartment rental data in 100 of the largest U.S. cities, ranking them according to the potential dollar amount saved when opting for a two-bedroom apartment with a roommate over a one-bedroom apartment solo. Our analysis involved meticulously comparing the median one-bedroom apartment rent to half the median two-bedroom apartment rent in each city, assuming an equal rent contribution from each roommate. The resulting rankings provide valuable insights into the cities where sharing a two-bedroom apartment can yield the most significant financial savings for individuals seeking to reduce their housing expenses. As such, this study serves as a valuable resource for anyone considering the cost-saving benefits of apartment sharing, empowering them to make informed decisions based on their financial situation and city of residence.
