Shaw Outage in Calgary: Fiber Cut Due to Vandalism Impacts 5,000 Customers

Around 5,000 residents in northwest Calgary experienced a Shaw outage on Tuesday, marking the second such incident in May. According to an email from a Rogers Communications representative, the disruption was caused by a fiber cut due to vandalism and suspected copper wire theft. Affected neighborhoods included Balmoral, Brentwood, Bridgeland, Capitol Hill, Charleswood, Collingwood, Crescent Heights, Hillhurst, Mayfair, Mountview, Mount Pleasant, National, North Haven, Renfrew, Rosemont, Sunnyside, and Tuxedo Park. The spokesperson confirmed that the company had notified authorities and deployed technical teams to restore services promptly. However, vandalism-related outages can take significantly longer to repair, with repair times potentially extending three to four times longer than usual. The spokesperson also stated that vandalism-related outages have been increasing at an alarming rate year over year, with a reported increase of four to five times since 2022. This latest outage comes on the heels of a previous Shaw disruption in Calgary on May 6, which affected around 15,000 customers in Mount Pleasant, Tuxedo Park, Crescent Heights, and other areas of north Calgary.
