Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) has had a resurgence in form this IPL season, with five consecutive wins keeping their playoff hopes alive. However, their reliance on other teams’ results to advance to the next round remains a concern. Amidst this, former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh has suggested that RCB should consider reappointing Virat Kohli as their captain after the 2024 IPL season.
Harbhajan emphasizes the need for an Indian player to lead the side, stating that Kohli, like MS Dhoni for Chennai Super Kings, is a ‘big leader’ who can significantly impact his franchise. He points out Kohli’s aggressive approach and positive intent with the bat as key factors that have propelled RCB this season. Currently leading the Orange Cap tally, Kohli has showcased his ability to up the ante against spinners and boost the morale of bowlers during difficult times.
Kohli relinquished RCB’s captaincy after IPL 2021 to manage his workload. Under his leadership, the franchise reached the final in the 2016 edition. His impressive batting form this season, including smashing 33 sixes, the second-highest by a batter, further strengthens Harbhajan’s argument for his reinstatement as captain.
Harbhajan believes that Kohli’s leadership qualities, coupled with his on-field performance, make him the ideal candidate to lead RCB going forward. Should RCB fail to reach the playoffs in IPL 2024, Harbhajan’s advice to reappoint Kohli as captain could be a significant turning point for the franchise.
