Silchar Villagers Boycott Elections Demanding Development

Residents of two villages in the Silchar Lok Sabha constituency, Dugru Basti and Channighat Gaon Panchayat, have resolved to boycott the upcoming general elections due to the government’s failure to address their long-standing developmental issues.

Dugru Basti, located in the Dholai area, has been deprived of a proper road for decades, making it inaccessible and hindering the lives of its inhabitants. The lack of potable water and government welfare schemes further compounds the village’s problems. Despite repeated pleas to political leaders and authorities, no action has been taken.

Channighat Gaon Panchayat’s residents also face dire road conditions, with the Hawaithang-Lailapur, Frenchnagar-Khasiapunji, and Frenchnagar-Lalcherra roads being in a dilapidated state for several months. Despite approaching Assam minister Parimal Suklabaidya, who is now the BJP candidate from the Silchar seat, their pleas have gone unanswered.

Frustrated and left with no other options, the villagers have decided to boycott the elections as a form of protest against the government’s apathy. They have organized meetings and hoisted black flags, preventing political campaigning and leading to deserted polling booths.
