Silent Witness Episode 5 Recap: Power Grabs, Framing and a Deadly Secret

Matthew and Hana’s Discovery and Confrontation

Matthew and Hana, relentlessly pursuing the truth, finally unravel the secret hidden on the night Matthew fled Beijing. However, their attempts to relay the information to MI5 are thwarted. Their encounters lead them to a confrontation with a menacing assassin concealed below deck.

Power Plays and a Forced Departure

MI5 Director General Madeline Delaney stands her ground against John Tennant’s power grab. Tennant orchestrates a move to remove Delaney from Thames House.

Jess’s Peril and Hana’s Troubled Past

The assassin pursues Jess to her residence, lurking outside as Simon O’Brien suggests protective custody for her safety. However, MI5 operatives swiftly intervene and take Jess into their custody.

Hana confides in her troubled relationship with Jess, revealing she wrote an article about her without permission. She expresses remorse for hindering Jess’s career path.

Matthew’s Suspicions and the Mysterious Nano SIM Card

Fearing Sir George’s demise, Matthew reminisces about his final night in Beijing. He questions if Shen stabbed him and theorizes that she may have concealed something in his wound. Hana, with trepidation, investigates the gash, retrieving a Nano SIM card.

MI5 Under Fire

Jess faces interrogation by Delaney and Tennant, revealing that Hana’s mother was arrested and later died in custody during the Chinese takeover of Hong Kong. Delaney casts suspicion on Jess’s survival of an assassination attempt that claimed the life of a seasoned MI5 officer.

Tennant dismisses the inquiry into government agents removing files, escalating his power play. Hana contacts MI5, informing them of her discovery in Matthew’s wound. Delaney orders her to access the SIM card while remaining publicly visible, as the possession increases the danger she faces.

The Plot Thickens

MI5 establishes a secure location for Hana to view the files, but a mysterious killer severs the plane’s internet connection. Tennant attempts to attribute the incident to the Chinese, while Delaney remains skeptical.

Co-pilot Wu uncovers sabotage and paranormal occurrences within the aircraft. Agent Zhao and Hana engage in a confrontation, with Zhao betraying Hana. Matthew, suspecting foul play, witnesses the attack and intervenes.

Identity Theft and Framing

As Matthew overpowers the assassin, Zhao demands the SIM card, but Hana challenges him. The assassin returns and attacks Matthew, who ultimately defeats him.

The captain discovers Hana has retrieved the SIM card and witnesses Zhao’s demise. Zhao, with his final breath, refers to Hana as ‘Wing Yee,’ a name Nolan recognizes. A luggage tag reveals a suitcase containing cash and passports with Hana’s identity. She realizes she is being framed as a British spy.

Hana and Nolan plead with the captain to divert the plane, but he hesitates due to threats against his family. However, he unlocks a hatch, enabling Hana to seize control of the aircraft.

Delaney’s Resistance and Tennant’s Ambitions

Delaney confronts Tennant, predicting his plan to implicate the US and protect the nuclear deal. She expresses concerns about Tennant’s involvement in the unfolding events.

Delaney learns of Zhao’s death and recognizes the cyanide-filled tooth, suggesting his affiliation with Chinese state security. She refuses to speak with Minister Tan but engages with the Prime Minister, who assigns Tennant command of the operation.

Delaney fears for Hana and Nolan’s safety and leaves Thames House with Jess, defying Tennant. She suspects Tennant’s involvement in the treacherous plot and shares her concerns with Mike, unaware of his connection to the assassin who attempted to kill Jess.
