Simulator sessions play key role in M-Sport Ford Puma Rally1 improvement on asphalt

Simulator sessions in the US have proven instrumental in the improved performance of the M-Sport Ford Puma Rally1 on asphalt, as witnessed during the recent Croatia Rally. Although Ford does not operate as a full-fledged factory team in the World Rally Championship (WRC), it provides support to M-Sport’s WRC program. This support includes access to the Ford Performance Technical Centre’s simulator in America, which has aided in the development of the Puma. Adrien Fourmaux, one of M-Sport’s drivers, credits the simulator sessions with significantly transforming the Puma’s pace on asphalt since the season opener in Monte Carlo, where he finished fifth. In Croatia, M-Sport introduced a new rear wing, marking the car’s first noticeable performance upgrade this year. Fourmaux notched up two stage wins, including an impressive victory in the Power Stage, securing 13 championship points.

Fourmaux expressed his delight with the car’s progress since Monte Carlo. He acknowledged the initial struggles on tarmac but emphasized the extensive development efforts in the simulator and during testing. Fourmaux highlighted the improvements made but recognized the need for further enhancements, which the team is actively working on. He also acknowledged the positive impact of the simulator, emphasizing its effectiveness and the productive collaboration it has fostered between drivers, engineers, and the design team.

M-Sport team principal Richard Millener echoed Fourmaux’s sentiments, emphasizing the value of simulator access in their competition with fully manufacturer-backed teams like Toyota and Hyundai. Millener acknowledged the limitations of the simulator but praised its efficiency in optimizing testing time, given the stringent testing regulations. He also highlighted the simulator’s role in facilitating feedback between drivers and engineers, fostering continuous ideation. Millener acknowledged the limitations of the simulator, recognizing that rallying differs from circuit racing, for which simulators are primarily designed. Nevertheless, he emphasized the significance of Ford’s support and the valuable assistance it provides to M-Sport’s efforts.
