Singapore Airlines Flight Turbulence Leaves Passengers with Serious Injuries

A Singapore Airlines Boeing 777 flight from London’s Heathrow Airport to Singapore on Tuesday encountered severe turbulence over the Andaman Sea, resulting in multiple injuries among passengers and crew members. According to news reports, one 73-year-old British man died, and 27 people remain in intensive care at Bangkok’s Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital. The injured passengers include 19 men and 22 women ranging in age from 2 to 83 years. Of the injured, 22 have spinal or spinal cord damage, six have skull or brain injuries, and 13 have damage to bones or internal organs. Nine spinal surgeries and eight surgeries for other injuries have been performed, while 13 others remain at two different branches of the hospital. The cause of the turbulence is still under investigation. According to a 2021 report by the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, turbulence accounted for 37.6% of all accidents on larger commercial airlines between 2009 and 2018. The Federal Aviation Administration, another U.S. government agency, reported 146 serious injuries from turbulence from 2009 to 2021.
