Singapore and Timor-Leste Sign Visa-Free Travel Agreement, Boosting Tourism and Business

Singapore passport holders are set to enjoy visa-free travel to Timor-Leste, following a new agreement announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA). This agreement, formalized during a meeting between Singapore’s Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan and Timorese Foreign Minister Bendito dos Santos Freitas, marks a significant step in fostering closer ties between the two nations.

Previously, Singapore passport holders required a tourist visa for short-term visits to Timor-Leste. However, the new mutual visa waiver agreement removes this requirement, allowing Singaporeans to stay for up to 30 days without a visa. This exemption applies to holders of diplomatic, official, service, and ordinary passports. In return, Timor-Leste passport holders will continue to enjoy a 30-day visa-free stay in Singapore.

The MFA highlighted that this agreement aligns with Timor-Leste’s roadmap for joining the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), further solidifying the relationship between the two countries. This new visa-free travel arrangement is expected to have a positive impact on global travel by facilitating easier movement for travelers from both nations. The agreement is particularly beneficial for holidaymakers, business travelers, and corporate travelers, promoting increased tourism and business activities between the two countries. This arrangement reflects a growing trend of bilateral and multilateral agreements aimed at easing travel restrictions and fostering closer international relations.

During the meeting, Mr. Freitas and Dr. Balakrishnan also reaffirmed the excellent relations between Singapore and Timor-Leste. They celebrated the establishment of the Singapore embassy in Dili in April, marking a significant milestone in bilateral relations. Both ministers agreed to enhance cooperation in several key areas.

Mr. Freitas also met with Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, who reiterated Singapore’s unwavering support for Timor-Leste’s efforts to join ASEAN. This support includes initiatives like the Singapore-Timor-Leste ASEAN Readiness Support (STARS) package, launched in December 2022, and the Initiative for ASEAN Integration.
