Singapore Commissions Two Advanced Submarines, Bolstering Regional Naval Presence

Singapore has made a significant move to bolster its naval capabilities by commissioning two new advanced submarines, the Invincible and the Impeccable, on Tuesday. These submarines, acquired from Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems in a 1-billion-euro deal, represent a technological leap forward for the Singaporean fleet, enabling them to operate farther from shore with fewer sailors and boasting exceptional stealth capabilities.

The Invincible-class submarines, the fifth and sixth in Singapore’s fleet, are equipped with air-independent propulsion (AIP) technology. This system utilizes fuel cells to generate electricity, significantly reducing noise and allowing the submarines to remain submerged for extended periods, potentially weeks or even months, while covering thousands of kilometers. This quiet operation is crucial for underwater warfare and makes these vessels among the most silent in the region.

The Invincible class also features a crew complement of just 28 for each 70-meter submarine, making them highly efficient in terms of personnel. Moreover, they are the first Singaporean submarines to accommodate women crew members, reflecting a move towards inclusivity in the navy.

While the Invincible class is primarily armed with heavyweight torpedoes, experts highlight that the acquisition of these advanced submarines is not just about firepower. Their quietness and long-range capabilities are strategically important in the increasingly contested Indo-Pacific region.

The growing importance of undersea cables and maritime security in the region has emphasized the need for navies to be well-equipped for underwater operations. With China’s navy modernizing its submarine fleet and Indonesia investing in advanced Scorpene-class submarines, the addition of the Invincible class to Singapore’s arsenal reinforces its naval presence and allows it to play a more prominent role in regional naval drills, which are becoming increasingly frequent and significant.

These new submarines, alongside Singapore’s commitment to collaborating with the United States and its Asian allies, will contribute to regional security and stability. As a ‘target vessel’ for regional anti-submarine exercises, the Invincible class will provide valuable intelligence collection opportunities and contribute to Singapore’s role as a key player in the Indo-Pacific’s maritime landscape.
