Singapore’s Hotel Sustainability Roadmap: A Leading Force in Eco-Friendly Travel

In 2022, the Singapore Hotel Association (SHA) and the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) unveiled their Hotel Sustainability Roadmap, a strategic plan designed to advance sustainability within the hospitality sector. This initiative, in alignment with the broader Singapore Green Plan 2030, outlines a clear path for hotels to embrace sustainable practices, solidifying their role in the global Green Economy. The roadmap focuses on actionable objectives and methods, ultimately boosting business resilience and attracting eco-conscious travelers.

This strategy, spearheaded by the Hotel Sustainability Committee (HSC), positions the Singapore hotel sector as a leader in responsible travel. As of August 2023, a notable 25% of Singapore’s hotel rooms had achieved or were in the process of receiving international sustainability certification. This impressive figure demonstrates the commitment of the industry to embrace sustainable practices. By the second quarter of 2024, a total of 58 hotels had attained this esteemed certification. Leading hospitality groups like Pan Pacific Hotels Group, Far East Hospitality, and Resorts World Sentosa have achieved certified status for their local properties, setting a precedent for international expansion. The Ascott Limited has also earned GSTC-Committed status and is working towards 100% certification across its global portfolio where applicable.

The STB and SHA have identified four key focus areas within hotel operations to ensure that sustainability initiatives have a tangible impact:

*

Energy Efficiency:

Implementing measures to reduce energy consumption, such as utilizing energy-efficient appliances and optimizing building systems.

*

Water Conservation:

Implementing practices to minimize water usage, including low-flow fixtures and water-efficient landscaping.

*

Waste Management:

Reducing waste generation and promoting recycling initiatives.

*

Responsible Procurement:

Sourcing products and services from suppliers who prioritize sustainability and ethical practices.

Singapore’s dedication to sustainable tourism is further highlighted by its hosting of the GSTC’s Global Sustainable Tourism Conference from November 13-16, 2024. This annual event, typically held in a new location, brings together experts and professionals to share knowledge and best practices. The conference, including pre-conference training, will be held at the GSTC Industry Criteria-certified Equarius Hotel in Resorts World Sentosa, itself a recognized sustainable destination.

For hotels committed to sustainability and seeking to stand out in the market, obtaining a GSTC-Accredited Certification is essential. These certifications are awarded following a rigorous, transparent, and impartial verification process, ensuring the highest level of credibility and assurance. Certified hotels also have access to the GSTC Market Access Program, which connects them with OTAs and TMCs, boosting their market visibility and promoting them to travelers and travel service providers. This program actively updates OTA partners about certified properties, significantly enhancing their market presence.
