Sinner Crushes O’Connell to Reach US Open Round of 16

Jannik Sinner, the world’s top-ranked tennis player, continued his pursuit of a second Grand Slam title with a resounding victory over Christopher O’Connell in the US Open 2024 third round. Sinner dispatched his 87th-ranked opponent in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2, in a match that lasted just over an hour and a half.

The Italian’s path to the fourth round was made even smoother with the early exits of two of his biggest rivals for the title, Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic. However, Sinner remains focused on the task at hand, recognizing the challenges ahead.

“I try to stay on my side of the net and I’m trying to take it day by day. Each opponent is a very tough challenge. There have been already a couple of upsets, so let’s see what’s coming, but I’m very happy to be still here,” Sinner shared with reporters.

Sinner’s dominance was evident from the start. He quickly established a 5-0 lead in the first set and never looked back. While O’Connell offered some resistance in the second set, Sinner broke early and maintained his advantage, sealing the set with a spectacular crosscourt forehand winner.

The third set continued the trend, with Sinner breaking O’Connell twice to secure a comfortable victory. He finished the match with an impressive 46 winners, showcasing his aggressive and consistent play.

Sinner’s serve was particularly impressive, delivering 15 aces and not allowing O’Connell a single break point. His powerful and accurate serve played a crucial role in dictating the pace of the match.

“Today was a great match,” Sinner remarked. “I knew I had to play very solid throughout the whole match, and we played already a couple of times. I felt like today the serve was working really, really well,” he added.

Sinner’s next opponent in the fourth round will be either 14th-seeded American Tommy Paul or Canadian qualifier Gabriel Diallo. He is currently riding a wave of momentum, having won seven consecutive matches since the start of his successful run at the Cincinnati Open. With his impressive form and unwavering focus, Sinner appears poised for a deep run at the US Open.
