SKM Sweeps Sikkim Assembly Elections 2024, SDF Suffers Major Setback

The ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) has achieved a resounding victory in the 2024 Assembly elections, further solidifying its hold on the state’s political landscape. The SKM’s tally has increased to an impressive 31 seats, marking a significant gain from its 17 seats in the 2019 elections. This surge in support is a testament to the party’s popularity and its successful governance of Sikkim.

In contrast, the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), which has traditionally been a dominant force in Sikkim politics, has suffered a major setback. The party, which ruled the state for 25 consecutive years until 2019, has seen its representation dwindle to a single seat in the current assembly. This steep decline is a stark reversal of the SDF’s past electoral dominance, where it held all the seats in the state assembly as recently as 2009.

The SKM’s triumph over the SDF is particularly evident in the 15 seats that it flipped from the latter. These constituencies witnessed substantial margins of victory, ranging from 18.44% to a commanding 78.21%. The Djongu constituency, in particular, stands out with the highest margin of 78.21%. The SKM’s impressive performance underscores its deep roots in Sikkim and its ability to connect with the aspirations of the electorate.
