SkyWest Airlines is poised to enhance air connectivity in the Midwest with the announcement of a new summer route connecting Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) to Pellston Regional Airport (PLN) in Michigan. This service, set to operate under the United Express brand, is scheduled to commence during the upcoming summer season and is expected to provide significant benefits to both airports and the regions they serve.
The proposed route will operate without any government subsidies, a departure from the typical reliance on the federal government’s Essential Air Service (EAS) program for smaller airports. SkyWest intends to sustain the service financially through regular operations under the United Express banner. The airline will deploy CRJ200 aircraft, known for their efficiency and reliability on shorter routes, aligning with SkyWest’s strategy of optimizing its fleet for regional operations.
Pellston Regional Airport, located in northern Michigan, serves as a vital gateway to the region. Equipped with amenities like free parking, a full-service restaurant, rental car services, shuttle options, and complimentary Wi-Fi, the airport is well-positioned to handle increased passenger traffic. The proposed route will generate revenue through a charge of $4.50 per enplaned passenger, expected to exceed $118,000 between January 1, 2025, and May 1, 2026. These funds will be used to finance essential airport equipment, including a rotary plow truck for snow removal, demonstrating the airport’s dedication to maintaining high operational standards throughout the year.
Currently, Pellston Regional Airport’s sole scheduled commercial service connects to Detroit Metropolitan Airport, operated by SkyWest as a Delta Connection service. In addition to the proposed Chicago O’Hare route, SkyWest has expressed intentions to extend its service to Detroit, further solidifying its presence in Michigan and providing expanded connectivity options for passengers.
The combination of the existing Detroit route and the proposed Chicago service will significantly enhance Pellston’s connectivity to major urban centers.
