Snails Named After Robert Irwin

Scientists have bestowed a unique honor upon Robert Irwin, naming a newly discovered species of snail after him. The banded snail, which bears the scientific name figuladra robertirwini, is one of four snail species identified by Queensland Museum scientists.

The discovery was made through a combination of DNA analysis and dissections of snail reproductive structures, providing a more accurate method of identification. The snails are part of the figuladra group, found in dry vine thickets between the Mary River and the O’Connell River in Queensland.

Robert Irwin’s recognition comes after a significant personal event, as he and his girlfriend Rorie Buckey recently ended their two-year relationship in February. The couple announced their decision through a joint statement on their social media accounts.

Buckey, who is also involved in wildlife conservation, has recently joined Australia Zoo. She expressed her excitement to be part of groundbreaking crocodile research in North Queensland.
