Snowfall Surprises Kullu, Manali Amidst Scorching Heat in India

Himachal Pradesh’s higher elevations have received snowfall and rain as a result of a western disturbance. On April 29, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert after predicting a 3 to 4 degree decrease in temperature. The snowfall has closed 49 roads, including three National Highways, causing significant traffic jams. Surender Paul, the head of IMD Himachal Pradesh, attributes the snowfall and rain to a western disturbance. Higher altitudes in Shimla, Chamba, Sirmaur, Kullu, Lahaul-Spiti, and Kinnaur have received fresh snowfall. Koksar, Hansa, and the Atal Tunnel area in Kullu have also experienced snowfall. Paul highlights that the western disturbance has brought diverse weather conditions, including snow, rain, hailstorms, and thunderstorms, lowering temperatures by 3 to 4 degrees. He predicts further hailstorms on May 4 and May 5, though they are not expected to be severe. Another western disturbance is anticipated to approach the state soon, keeping temperatures low until May 15. The orange alert for snow and rain remains in effect for most areas, with Shimla’s temperature at 12 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 22 degrees Celsius. Paul anticipates a rise in maximum temperatures starting tomorrow.
