Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min faces a race against time to be fit for their highly anticipated Premier League trip to Manchester United this weekend. The South Korean forward was forced off early during Tottenham’s midweek Europa League victory over Qarabag, raising concerns about his availability for the clash at Old Trafford.
Son, who has been instrumental in Tottenham’s strong start to the season, looked visibly uncomfortable in the second half of the Qarabag match. He received treatment on the pitch before being substituted, with manager Ange Postecoglou later attributing his withdrawal to fatigue.
However, Postecoglou acknowledged that Son’s fitness is still being assessed ahead of the Manchester United encounter. “It’s still early days from last night. Fair to say the boys that put in a shift are fairly tired,” Postecoglou stated. “Apart from Sonny, everyone’s okay, but I don’t think it’s too bad (with Son). He wants to train tomorrow so we’ll see how he goes at training and make a decision from there. We have another day up our sleeve to give him every chance.”
The news of Son’s potential absence comes as a blow to Tottenham, who are aiming to maintain their early season momentum. The 32-year-old forward has been a key figure in their attack, already contributing two goals and two assists this season. He is also in the final year of his contract, and Postecoglou has made it clear he wants the South Korean to extend his stay with the north London club.
“I don’t have the final say but my input is significant. The way he’s performing and leading the club I want him to stick around for a while,” Postecoglou expressed.
The match against Manchester United holds particular significance as Tottenham aim to continue their strong form against their fierce rivals. Last season, they held United to a draw at Old Trafford, and Postecoglou is confident his team can once again secure a positive result at the iconic stadium.
“I’ve never been scared of a venue… What makes venues unique is the atmosphere and when we played there last year it was brilliant,” Postecoglou emphasized. “The supporters got behind their club – I’m not sure if that’s changed. It’s a great stadium with the history and tradition behind it. It’s a game players and managers get excited about.”
The game also presents a challenge for Erik ten Hag, who has been under pressure to deliver consistent results at Manchester United. However, Postecoglou was quick to praise his counterpart, highlighting his impressive achievements despite the criticism he has faced.
“He keeps mentioning he’s won two trophies and that’s not insignificant. Everyone keeps saying that is all I need to do but then there is always something expected after. It is a difficult job,” Postecoglou acknowledged. “It is tough to go to Old Trafford. Irrespective of managers, it is still a rather compelling home record. It is one we will be ready for.”
As Tottenham prepare for their trip to Manchester United, the availability of Son Heung-min remains a key question mark. His potential absence could significantly impact their chances of securing a positive result against a formidable opponent, making this weekend’s clash one to watch closely.
