Sonic 3 producer Toby Ascher has revealed that the upcoming film will take significant inspiration from Sonic Adventure 2, a beloved game in the franchise.
According to Ascher, Sonic 3 is ‘probably the most exciting thing that we’ve done in the franchise.’ He notes that the film will borrow heavily from Sonic Adventure 2 and other games that the core Sonic Team grew up loving.
Sonic Adventure 2, originally released in 2001 on the Dreamcast, introduced Shadow the Hedgehog and has remained a fan favorite. Sonic 3 is expected to feature the character, along with the game’s design aesthetic and the track ‘Live and Learn’ by Crush 40.
Ascher also hints at a possible connection to Cyberpunk 2077, as Knuckles actor Idris Elba has expressed familiarity with rumors surrounding his co-star’s involvement in the Sonic-verse. Elba emphasizes that Sonic 3 is ‘in increments,’ with each installment building upon the previous one.
Knuckles, a spin-off series featuring the character, is set to premiere on Paramount Plus on April 26 in the US and April 27 in the UK.
