Sonos has delivered an interim update to its app, addressing a key concern for iOS users: excessive battery drain. The company announced that the update, available now, tackles “an issue where the app used excess phone battery on iOS.” Alongside this, the update also boasts improvements in stability when adding new products to the Sonos system. This update is part of an ongoing effort to rectify issues that plagued the Sonos app since its major overhaul in mid-May 2024, preceding the release of the Sonos Ace headphones.
While app updates are common, the Sonos app faced significant backlash from users due to its drastic changes in design and functionality. Some features were intentionally removed, with promises of their return in future updates, but other issues were more fundamental, causing frustration for users.
Sonos acknowledged the issues and has been transparent with users, actively engaging in the Sonos subreddit, outlining known bugs and providing broad update schedules. This proactive approach showcased the company’s awareness of the problems and their commitment to resolving them. However, it took over two months for the CEO, Patrick Spence, to publicly address the issues, stating on July 25 that “fixing the app for all of our customers and partners has been and continues to be our number one priority.”
Despite this interim update, users are eagerly awaiting a future update that will bring full functionality to the Sonos Ace headphones. Specifically, the company aims to release an update in late summer or fall that will allow the Ace headphones to seamlessly integrate with the Beam soundbar through the Audio Swap feature. Currently, this feature only works with the Sonos Arc soundbar. This update will be a crucial step in addressing the concerns of users who purchased the Ace headphones and eagerly await their full integration into the Sonos ecosystem.
