Sonu Nigam Pays Respects to Asha Bhosle by Washing Her Feet at Biography Launch

At the launch of legendary Bollywood singer Asha Bhosle’s biography ‘Swaraswamini Asha’ in Mumbai, singer Sonu Nigam paid a heartfelt tribute to the icon by washing her feet. This gesture, a traditional Indian expression of respect and gratitude, showcased Nigam’s deep admiration for Bhosle’s legacy.

The event on June 28th was graced by prominent personalities including Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat, Mumbai Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Ashish Shelar, and Bhosle’s brother, Pandit Hridaynath Mangeshkar. During the event, Bhosle reminisced about her connection with Hindutva leader Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. Actor Jackie Shroff also attended the launch, presenting Bhosle with a flower pot as a token of appreciation.

Nigam’s act of reverence, where he washed Bhosle’s feet, kissed them, and then prostrated (saashtaang pranaam), touched the hearts of many. Bhosle, though visibly embarrassed, smiled and covered her face.

Social media users lauded Nigam’s gesture, praising his respect for the 90-year-old legend. One user remarked, “This is pure beauty! We have traditions of Gurupujan and this is symbolic how we respect our Guru,” while another called it a “beautiful moment honoring a music icon”.

“This is beautiful. So quintessentially Indian. Such are the things that make us proud to be Indians,” wrote one user, with another adding, “Worshipping and offering reverence to the Goddess Sarawati in her.”

Several users acknowledged the courage it took to express respect publicly in today’s world, while others simply admired Nigam’s genuine gesture. “Really appreciate Sonu’s behavior.. Asha the Great , absolutely Great,” replied one user on X (formerly Twitter). “What a wholesome moment. Two living legends. I wish lata ji was alive and on this stage,” wrote another.

‘Swaraswamini Asha’, a compilation of written works by 90 authors, is expected to be a cherished gift for Bhosle’s fans. It features rare photographs that document her journey and artistic evolution.
