Sophie Turner has opened up about the intense media scrutiny and mom-shaming she experienced following her divorce from Joe Jonas. The Game of Thrones star, in an interview with Vogue, described the period after the split as “the worst few days of my life.”
Turner was particularly critical of the sexist headlines that portrayed her as a reckless partyer while Jonas was cast as a dedicated father. She recalled being on set and feeling helpless as these false narratives circulated. “I really do completely torture myself over every move I make as a mother – mum guilt is so real! I just kept having to say to myself, ‘None of this is true. You are a good mum and you’ve never been a partier,’” she said.
The actor also took aim at the “wayward mother” trope in media, emphasizing that judgments based solely on images are misleading. She stressed that her own story was being misrepresented, leaving her feeling like she was watching “a movie of my life that I hadn’t written, hadn’t produced, or starred in.”
While Turner faced criticism, she also received support from fellow working mothers who understood the challenges of balancing career and family. She expressed gratitude for the changing attitudes and increased understanding towards mothers. “If something like this had happened to me 10 years ago I don’t think I would have had the same support. I just feel very lucky to be alive in a time when people are open-minded,” Turner said.
Sophie Turner’s experience highlights the persistent double standards and biases against mothers in the media. It also underscores the importance of empathy and support for working mothers who often face unfair criticism and scrutiny.
