Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has sounded a note of caution to Manchester United’s rising star Alejandro Garnacho, warning him about the potential pitfalls of early success. Garnacho has emerged as a key player under Erik ten Hag this season, earning a lucrative contract and scoring a memorable Premier League goal. However, Souness expressed concern that the 19-year-old’s newfound fame may lead to complacency, citing Marcus Rashford as an example of a player who may have peaked too soon.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Souness said, “Garnacho, for me, is an exceptionally talented young man, but I worry for him. He’s got two earrings in the warm-up on the pitch, and he’s a young boy just learning the game.”
Souness believes that the intense spotlight on United players can hinder their development, suggesting that the allure of fame and wealth can take its toll. He cited Rashford, who at 25, may have already passed his peak years.
Souness acknowledged Garnacho’s talent but emphasized the importance of staying grounded and focused on improvement. He urged the young Argentine to learn from the mistakes of others and to avoid letting success change his mindset.
Garnacho has been a key player under Ten Hag this season, making 43 appearances and contributing nine goals and four assists in all competitions. However, he found himself in hot water with Ten Hag after ‘liking’ posts on social media that criticized his manager. The matter was resolved after Garnacho apologized for his actions.
Despite the Wembley semi-final collapse, where United conceded three goals in the final 20 minutes to Coventry, Garnacho was not at fault, having been substituted with the scoreline at 3-0 to Manchester United.
