Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has stated his desire for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to open the innings for India in the upcoming T20 World Cup in June.
During an interaction organized by the Delhi Capitals, where Ganguly serves as the director of cricket, he expressed his personal opinion that Sharma and Kohli should partner at the top of the order.
Ganguly acknowledged that the final decision rests with the national selection panel, which is expected to announce the provisional squad for the T20 World Cup over the weekend ahead of the May 1 deadline for squad submission.
He also expressed his hope that Sharma, the captain, and Rahul Dravid, the head coach, can devise a fearless method for playing T20 cricket, leveraging the team’s exceptional six-hitting abilities.
Ganguly acknowledged that a section of fans and experts have questioned Sharma and Kohli’s ability to consistently deliver in T20s, but he remained confident in their capabilities.
Drawing comparisons to Rohit Sharma’s aggressive batting in the 50-over World Cup, Ganguly emphasized the importance of applying pressure on the opposition early in the innings.
He encouraged the duo to adopt a similar approach in T20s, highlighting their exceptional talent, and expressed his belief that they can be a formidable opening pair for India in the upcoming T20 World Cup.
