South Seas Tarpon Tournament Raises $200,000 for Folds of Honor

The South Seas Tarpon Tournament, a highly anticipated annual event held on the picturesque Captiva Island along the Gulf Coast of Florida, recently concluded its inaugural year with remarkable success. The tournament, which took place on May 24, 2024, was organized in collaboration with Folds of Honor, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing life-changing educational grants to the spouses and children of American fallen or disabled armed forces members and first responders.

With the participation of 31 skippers and 111 anglers, the South Seas Tarpon Tournament generated an impressive $200,000 in funds, which translates to 40 grants for deserving Folds of Honor recipients in Lee County. The tournament’s prize money pool totaled $32,000, with Owens Corning Lumber emerging as the victorious team under the leadership of Captain William Rinehold, claiming four catches and a $16,000 payout. Other notable teams included Target Roofing, led by Captain Tyler Carner with three catches, and Sunstate Mobile Marine, captained by Shane Earhart with two catches.

The tournament was not merely a competition but also a celebration of patriotism and camaraderie. The event commenced with a breathtaking display as a patriot paratrooper squad descended onto Sunset Beach, carrying American flags while onlookers cheered with enthusiasm. The Lee County Honor Guard added to the solemn atmosphere with a Presentation of Colors and a 21-gun salute, accompanied by the poignant sounds of a local bagpiper.

The evening culminated in a heartwarming dinner, where attendees enjoyed barbecue and listened to inspiring stories. Ashlyn McCain, a Folds of Honor grant recipient, shared her personal journey of resilience and the transformative impact of her grant, which enabled her to pursue her higher education at her university of choice.
