South Sharqiyah Embarks on Development and Tourism Projects to Boost Domestic Tourism

South Sharqiyah Governorate, under the leadership of Dr. Yahya bin Badr al Maawali, is actively pursuing a range of development and tourism initiatives to boost domestic tourism and stimulate economic growth. These projects are part of a broader strategy to enhance the region’s appeal and position it as a premier tourist destination.

Among the key projects are two new waterfronts, one in the Al Ashkharah area and another in Jaalan Bani Bu Ali. The Jaalan Bani Bu Ali waterfront project has already been awarded a tender, while the bidding process for the Al Ashkharah project is underway. These waterfronts are expected to provide enhanced waterfront experiences, attract visitors, and revitalize commercial activities in the region.

Beyond the waterfront projects, the governorate is also investing in the construction of parks and other amenities to improve the tourism infrastructure. By December 2022, 25 heritage and tourism projects had been identified, with a total confirmed and planned investment of RO90.51 million projected by 2025. This significant investment underscores the region’s commitment to developing a robust tourism sector.

South Sharqiyah’s average summer temperature, which remains below 30°C, makes it an attractive travel destination year-round. To further support domestic tourism and diversify recreational activities, the governorate will host events such as a surfing championship in mid-August. The first surfing championship, successfully held in 2022 in Ras al Hadd in the wilayat of Sur, aims to promote the culture of surfing among the community, particularly young people, and attract surfers and watersports enthusiasts from within and outside Oman.

These efforts are part of a broader strategy to enhance South Sharqiyah’s tourism sector. The region has made remarkable strides in improving infrastructure and public amenities, and these new projects are expected to further enhance its appeal as a tourist destination. For travelers planning their itineraries, these developments mean more options and improved facilities, making South Sharqiyah an even more attractive destination for both adventure seekers and those looking to explore Oman’s rich heritage.
