Brian Neefe, the iconic Southern Lehigh softball coach who retired last summer after 52 seasons, was celebrated in a heartwarming ceremony on Monday at the school’s softball field. Neefe, who holds the record for most wins in Pennsylvania scholastic softball history with 847, was surrounded by former players, coaches, and administrators who shared their memories and expressed their gratitude. Despite ongoing health issues that include a recent heart catheterization procedure, Neefe was determined to attend the ceremony and was visibly moved by the outpouring of love and support. One of the highlights of the ceremony was the presence of Hope Donnell, one of Neefe’s first players who went on to become a standout softball player at Kutztown University. Neefe had often regaled his players with stories about Donnell’s exploits, and it was a special moment for them to reunite. Another former player, Kristin (Arnold) Boyer, who is now the head coach at Southern Lehigh, expressed her admiration for Neefe’s impact on her life and career. “The reason why I am here is because of Coach Neefe,” Boyer said. “He taught me so much about the game of softball and about life. He is a true legend and I am so grateful for everything he has done for me and for the Southern Lehigh softball program.” The ceremony also featured the unveiling of old-time uniforms and a photo opportunity with Neefe, who posed with some of the most accomplished players in the program’s history, including Danielle Barnes, who holds the school record for highest single-season batting average, and Hope Donnell, who holds the record for career batting average. The event was organized by the school’s athletic department, booster club, and former athletic director Marc Zimmerman, and current AD Matt Spengler. It was a fitting tribute to a coach who dedicated his life to the sport of softball and to the young women who played for him. Despite the challenges he has faced, Neefe remains a passionate advocate for the game and for the Southern Lehigh softball program. He continues to attend games and support the team, and his presence is a reminder of the legacy he has built.
