Southern Linc Elevates Alan McIntyre to Lead Engineering and Operations Team
ATLANTA, Nov. 4, 2024 – Southern Linc, a wholly owned subsidiary of Southern Company, has announced the appointment of Alan McIntyre as Vice President of Engineering and Operations. This strategic decision, made by the Southern Linc Board of Directors, reflects the company’s commitment to continued excellence in delivering reliable and resilient wireless services.
McIntyre brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success to his new role. With over 30 years dedicated to wireless telecommunications, he has consistently demonstrated a deep understanding of the industry and its complexities. His previous position as Engineering Director at Southern Linc saw him spearhead the company’s transition to LTE technology, a significant undertaking that involved the development and construction of two geographically redundant core data centers, 1,300 LTE cell sites, and the integration of VoLTE and mission-critical push-to-talk (MCPTT) sub-systems. This ambitious project resulted in the successful conversion of thousands of voice and data devices to LTE, solidifying Southern Linc’s position as a leader in the wireless communications landscape.
McIntyre’s expertise extends beyond technology implementation. He was actively involved in the international 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standards organization, contributing to the adoption of new specifications that facilitated Southern Linc’s transition to LTE technology. His commitment to industry standards underscores his dedication to driving innovation and ensuring the highest levels of service delivery.
“We are thrilled to announce Alan’s promotion at Southern Linc,” stated Bentina Terry, President and CEO of Southern Linc and Southern Telecom. “Alan’s vast experience, his significant contributions to our company and the telecom sector, along with his humility and dedication to Southern Company values, make him an excellent addition to our executive team.”
McIntyre’s expertise in wireless spectrum is equally impressive. He played a key role in the FCC’s 800 MHz rebanding proceedings in the early 2000s, securing contiguous spectrum for Southern Linc. His involvement in the FCC proceeding during 2011-2012 further strengthened Southern Linc’s position by enabling broadband operations in its spectrum band. Notably, he was a member of auction teams within Southern Company that successfully secured licenses in multiple FCC-conducted spectrum auctions, demonstrating his strategic acumen and understanding of the competitive spectrum landscape.
McIntyre’s academic background complements his professional experience. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and a Master of Business Administration degree in Management Information Systems from Auburn University. His commitment to education extends beyond his own achievements. In 2017, he joined the Auburn board that provides strategic advice for the university’s Wireless Engineering Research and Education Center, showcasing his dedication to fostering the next generation of wireless professionals.
