The Southwest Monsoon has arrived in Mumbai two days ahead of its usual schedule on June 9th. According to an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official, favorable conditions along the Maharashtra coast contributed to the early arrival of the monsoon, which typically occurs by June 11th. Last year, the monsoon hit Mumbai on June 24th due to Cyclone ‘Biparjoy’ over the Arabian Sea.
The IMD has issued a red alert for Sindhudurg and its neighboring district Kolhapur, indicating a high likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall in most areas. Neighboring areas such as Raigad and Ratnagiri are also expected to experience heavy rainfall. Most districts in Marathwada and Vidarbha regions of Maharashtra are forecasted to receive heavy rainfall.
Heavy rainfall has also been reported across various areas in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and coastal Karnataka over the past 24 hours. The National Centre for Coastal Research (NCCR) has predicted high waves and coastal erosion along the Kerala coast until 11:30 PM on June 10th. The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has advised fishermen and coastal residents to exercise extreme caution and evacuate hazardous areas if necessary.
Authorities recommend securing fishing vessels and maintaining a safe distance between boats to prevent accidents. They also advise against beach and sea activities during this time. The public is urged to follow the instructions of local authorities and take all necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
