Spain Calls Up Euro 2024 Stars Yamal and Williams for Nations League Defense

Spain is set to kick off its defense of the UEFA Nations League title with a squad featuring the rising stars who propelled them to European Championship glory. Coach Luis de la Fuente revealed his lineup on Friday for the first two matches of the competition, sticking with the core group that brought home the European Championship trophy in July. The tournament saw Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams ignite the competition, and both young talents are back in the fold.

Spain’s campaign begins with an away trip to Serbia on September 5, followed by a clash against Switzerland on September 8. De la Fuente has added two new faces to the squad: Celta Vigo right back Óscar Mingueza and Valencia midfielder Pepelu. Notably, he has also recalled Aleix García, Pau Torres, Yeremy Pino, and Robert Sánchez, all of whom were absent during the Euros.

While Spain boasts a formidable squad, there are some notable absentees due to injury. First-choice goalkeeper Unai Simón, the hero of last year’s Nations League final, and striker Álvaro Morata are both sidelined.

Spain is currently enjoying an incredibly successful period in football. Not only did they win the European Championship, but their men’s team also took home Olympic gold this summer. Adding to their achievements, the Spanish women’s team recently triumphed at the 2023 World Cup.
