Spain, the reigning Euro 2024 champions, began their Nations League campaign with a disappointing goalless draw against Serbia on Thursday. The result ended their impressive nine-game winning streak and marked their first dropped points since March.
Despite dominating possession throughout the match, Spain struggled to convert their numerous scoring opportunities. The European champions were missing key players like midfielder Rodri and captain Alvaro Morata due to a suspension and injury respectively. The absence of goalkeeper Unai Simon also impacted their performance.
Spain started the match slowly, registering only two shots on target in the first half. They were fortunate to escape the break without conceding as Serbia forward Luka Jokic missed a golden chance from close range.
The second half saw Spain improve their performance, but they continued to waste several good scoring opportunities. Dani Carvajal missed a close-range volley while Barcelona teenager Lamine Yamal, one of Spain’s brightest sparks, created several chances that went begging.
Despite having 76% ball possession, Spain lacked ideas in the final third and ultimately failed to break down the Serbian defense.
Spain manager Luis de la Fuente acknowledged the team’s shortcomings in the first half, but remained optimistic about their progress. He attributed the lackluster performance to player fatigue and the challenging conditions. He also emphasized that the match was essentially a pre-season game for Spain, given the busy schedule and the early stage of the season.
Despite the draw, Spain will be looking to bounce back in their next Nations League fixture. The team will be hoping to regain their winning form and solidify their position in Group Four.
